MCV4U Calculus and Vectors Tutoring
Derivatives, applications, and vectors — taught with the rigour universities expect.
What You'll Master in MCV4U
Limits and Continuity
Intuitive limits, one-sided limits, and continuity — the ideas that make the derivative meaningful.
Derivative Rules
Power, product, quotient, and chain rules, practiced until rule selection becomes automatic.
Derivatives of Exponential and Trigonometric Functions
Differentiating exponential functions and sine and cosine, including combinations with the chain rule.
Applications of Derivatives
Optimization, related rates, and curve sketching — where calculus solves real problems.
Vectors
Vector operations in two and three dimensions, dot and cross products, and applications.
Equations of Lines and Planes
Vector, parametric, and symmetric equations of lines and planes, and finding their intersections.
Applications of Vectors
Projections, distances between points, lines, and planes, and geometric applications of vectors.
Who MCV4U Tutoring Is For
- Grade 12 students taking MCV4U alongside or after MHF4U
- University-bound STEM students — engineering, computer science, physics — for whom calculus is a first-year foundation
- Students who can differentiate mechanically but freeze on application and word problems
- Students who want rigorous preparation for the final exam and university-style marking
How We Teach MCV4U
Diagnose
A free assessment separates rule-fluency problems (which derivative rule to use) from application problems (modelling, vectors) so practice targets the real weakness.
Rule fluency
Power, product, quotient, and chain rules — plus derivatives of exponential and trig functions — drilled until choosing the right rule is automatic.
Application problem-solving
Optimization, related rates, curve sketching, and vector geometry taught as repeatable problem-solving processes with diagrams first, algebra second.
Exam simulation
Full-length, timed, exam-style practice with detailed feedback on method marks — because in MCV4U, showing correct reasoning earns the grade.
MCV4U FAQs
MCV4U must be taken after or at the same time as MHF4U Advanced Functions — MHF4U is a prerequisite or co-requisite. If your child is taking both in Grade 12, we can coordinate support across the two courses.
MHF4U deepens the study of functions — polynomials, rationals, logs, trig. MCV4U introduces genuinely new mathematics: limits, derivatives and their applications, plus vectors and the geometry of lines and planes. They exercise different muscles, and students often find one much harder than the other.
Optimization and related-rates problems are multi-step modelling tasks: read, diagram, define variables, differentiate, interpret. We teach a repeatable five-step process so students stop freezing at the word problem and start executing.
Yes. MCV4U content maps closely onto first-year university calculus, so our teaching deliberately builds the habits — precise notation, justification of steps, checking reasonableness — that university markers reward.
